Oklahoma GM Jim Nagy's experience can rebuild Sooners

During his time as the executive director of the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Alabama, Jim Nagy built the Senior Bowl into a first-class operation and a game that is must-watch television. Now, Nagy will hope to build the Oklahoma Sooners into a powerhouse it once was.

The Sooners are coming off a 6-7 season in 2024 under head coach Brent Venables. Under Venables, the Sooners are 22-17 in three seasons.

With 20 years of experience in scouting departments of NFL teams like the Commanders, Seahawks, Chiefs and Patriots, Nagy ran the Senior Bowl and its talent evaluation cadre like one would run a war room and draft boards leading up to day 1 of the NFL Draft.

As the new general manager of the Oklahoma Sooners, Nagy will look to use his skills in scouting talent to build a championship roster in Norman. He will oversee NIL matters, the transfer portal, roster management and retention, scholarships and eligibility criteria.

"This is a new era in intercollegiate athletics at one of the greatest college football programs in the country," Nagy said in a statement, as reported by Ryan Aber of The Oklahoman. "The legacy of excellence that precedes my arrival is a testament to the leadership at OU and the university's commitment to execute at a championship level. I am honored to bring my experience and work ethic to this program and am confident that through collaboration and effort, we can achieve excellent results. I am truly excited to get to Norman and begin our process with Coach (Brent) Venables and his great staff."

What Nagy does in the coming months with player evaluation and roster building could be the mold and the model that every program in America will try to duplicate. His hiring is a testament to the commitment by Oklahoma to raise its football program to new heights and succeed within the ever-changing world of college football.

The Michigan native had a dream of one day running an NFL team. Nagy brings an expertise that is unparalleled in today’s college game. He will run the Sooners program like an NFL team, just like he always dreamed of.
