The Oklahoma Sooners had a bad offensive line in 2024, with a revolving door at almost every position due to both play and injuries. Heading into 2025, they are set to be majorly improved there, but after 2025, it gets a little mysterious.

When you play in the SEC, you have to constantly prepare your trenches, and recruit years and years ahead for the trenches. That's where the SEC is won, and Brent Venables is doing just that. It may not feel like it, but they are really attacking both sides of the trenches.

And now, the Sooners are in the running for one of the top interior offensive linemen, along with other schools that are known as OL schools.

Sooners in top six race for OL Carter Scruggs

Carter Scruggs is a four-star offensive lineman from Loudoun County High School in Leesburg, Virginia, and a top prospect in the class of 2026. At 6’6” and around 270 pounds, he’s a dominant interior offensive lineman and tackle, ranked No. 125 overall, No. 8 IOL, and No. 7 in Virginia by On3, and No. 133 overall, No. 6 IOL, and No. 6 in Virginia by 247Sports.

Scruggs has over 30 scholarship offers from top programs like Alabama, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, Oklahoma, and Virginia Tech. He’s narrowed his choices to a top-12 list and recently visited Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Virginia Tech, with the latter currently leading with a 24.3% chance of landing him, per On3.

He was impressed by Oklahoma’s culture and Michigan’s academics and coaching, especially after earning OL MVP at a Michigan camp. With a coach like Bill Bedenbaugh running the show on the offensive line, recruits are often drawn in by his ability to get guys into the league. So, at this point, that may be what the Sooners have to rely on in the recruiting process.

They could really need him, of course, anyone could. In the SEC, you have to build through the trenches.
