Cooper Hackett is one of the best recruits in the 2027 class, and Brent Venables and the Oklahoma Sooners have been chasing him for at least a year and a half. He is one of the most coveted offensive linemen in the country, and Oklahoma is pulling out all the stops to show him that.
There's no secret that the Sooners had one of the worst offensive lines in the country last year. It shouldn't be that way when you factor in that they have one of the best offensive line coaches in the entire country, Bill Bedenbaugh, to get the Sooners back on track to becoming that powerhouse that they once were.
Getting Hackett could help them get back to that.
Brent Venables and his staff really love what Hackett brings to the table, and they've been showing him how much they want him by talking to him pretty much every single day.
“I mean, I was just talking to him [Bedenbaugh] right before I came on the field,” Hackett told Rivals. “He was talking to me about my scrimmage today. I just talk to him all the time. My uncle has a really great relationship with Coach Chavis; that’s just kind of random, the D-ends coach and my uncle — and my uncle lives in Kansas City, too. It’s all the coaches, really. Coach Bates texts me every day; Coach Bedenbaugh is who I talk to every other day. That’s the biggest thing.”
It's clear that they want him, because if they didn't want him, they wouldn't be talking to him every single day. Do you know how many recruits they probably talk to? And do you know how hard it is to remember to talk to the same one almost every day, while also being a coach at Oklahoma?
So, yes, they want Hackett, and why wouldn't they? Hackett is a four-star, but on the verge of becoming a five-star, as he's currently a top-ten player in the country on nearly every recruiting site's rankings. Hackett has the size and tools to play in the SEC, and with Michael Fasusi being the future of the offensive line, they will need another guy to eventually take on that role when Fasusi goes on to the NFL.
Right now, the Sooners have competition when it comes to getting Hackett. Texas Tech is the other team in the mix, and we know that they are willing to pay big-time money for big-time players. But, they don't seem to have quite the relationship with Hackett that Oklahoma does.
