The Oklahoma Sooners completely remade their wide receiver corps in the offseason, adding five new receivers out of the winter and spring transfer portal periods to replace their departures out after cleaning out their roster after a dismal 2024 season.
Their most recent addition, and their only addition at receiver in the spring transfer portal, was McNeese receiver Jer'Michael Carter. The Sooners beat out several other schools interested in him, and are confident in their reformed receiver room heading into 2025.
On Tuesday, head coach Brent Venables talked about Carter and why the staff was so excited to add him to the team and made him a priority in the spring portal.
"Jer’Michael Carter is a guy that I’m really excited about. All of Jer’Michael’s best days are in front of him. But he’s got great size, plays with toughness. His receivers coach was a collegiate teammate of mine, Michael Smith. And a really good college coach. He’s been coached the right way."
A height/weight/speed playmaker at 6'4 and 192 pounds, Carter had a solid season of production on an average McNeese team, leading the Cowboys with 38 catches for 548 yards and three touchdowns in 2024. While that may not seem like world-beating production, all of those marks would have led the Sooners in 2024 and he played in a poor passing offense.
The Sooners already have Deion Burks, Jacob Jordan, and Zion Kearney returning from last season, and fellow transfer wide receiver Isaiah Sategna has impressed throughout the spring. Additionally, freshman Elijah Thomas has shown out so far in camp, and many seem convinced it's only a matter of time before he breaks into the starting lineup this season.
Adding Carter to this mix has the coaching staff confident that the product in 2025 will be a significant improvement from 2024. We don't know how the depth chart will stack up at all, but as it stands, it's hard not to agree with the plethora of weapons the Sooners have at their disposal.
