Oklahoma Sooners could form dynamite defensive duo in 2026 class who could be long term starters for the team
Mark Zaleski / The Tennessean / USA TODAY NETWORK

This week, the Oklahoma Sooners added three-star cornerback Derrick Johnson II, the son of Derrick Johnson Sr, a former San Francisco 49ers. Johnson was the Sooners' 10th commitment for the class of 2026 and was one of their visitors during their major June 6th recruiting event.

Johnson was the first cornerback the Sooners have added in their class, but they aren't stopping with him. They invited another coveted cornerback to their June 6th event, and he seemingly could be making his decision in favor of Oklahoma soon.

Florida cornerback Danny Odem, a four-star who is one of the top prospects from the Sunshine State, left Oklahoma's June 6th event on a positive note, and it certainly feels like Oklahoma made a lasting impression on him.

Odem will be visiting Auburn, Nebraska, Ohio State, and Penn State as well, and has already visited Clemson, but the Sooners did a terrific job convincing him of his place and fit with the team.

On3's RPM prediction machine moved the Sooners into the lead following his June 6th visit, but it's a neck-and-neck battle still.

It's important for Oklahoma to find their future in the secondary. While Eli Bowen still has at least two more seasons of eligibility, it seems likely he might declare early if he keeps up his high level of play. If that happens, Oklahoma will need to find their starter to replace him, and Odem feels like a strong candidate to be just that.

A multi-sport athlete who is a state champion in basketball, Odem plays both sides in high school, and you can see his quick twitch and explosive movement on film. At 6'2, you can see he also brings terrific length to the position, something the Sooners are coveting at cornerback with their recent offers.

He and the aforementioned Derrick Johnson II have the skill sets and traits to be the long-term starters in the secondary for the Sooners. With their length and athletic backgrounds, they align perfectly with the vision Brent Venables and defensive backs coach Jay Valai have on defense.

Oklahoma will have to fend off other schools, especially with Ohio State and Penn State lurking and getting later visits, to bring Odem in. He is set to announce his commitment on June 23rd, and it could come down to the wire in his recruitment. It would be a massive win for the Sooners to win this one.
