Oklahoma Sooners offense could put up videogame like numbers in 2025 with gamebreaking playmakers John Mateer and Jaydn Ott

The Oklahoma Sooners' offense wasn't much to write home about in 2024, ranking 129th in EPA/Play and 117th in success rate in their worst offensive season in decades. It was dark, depressing, and headache-inducing to try and break down every week.

Oh how fast times can change.

In just one offseason, the Sooners' offense feels completely different, thanks to the addition of quarterback John Mateer and running back Jaydn Ott in the transfer portal.

This change reportedly even shows up in the latest CFB26 video game, released by EA Sports. According to The Athletic's Chris Vannini, the Sooners seem poised to be a game-breaking offense in the upcoming game, thanks to their new dynamic duo.

"I’ve already played with the Sooners in my brief hands-on with CFB26, and they’re as fun as you would expect. With dual-threat quarterback John Mateer, running back Jaydn Ott and a strong defense, the Sooners might be the go-to team for a majority of casual online players the same way Alabama was last year. Mateer finished CFB25 as an 87 overall and Ott was an 89. Both should be better. Oklahoma was one of the biggest portal winners this offseason. It needs to show up on the real field for head coach Brent Venables this year, but on the virtual field, they’re guaranteed fun."

Last season, Oklahoma's offense sure made you want to break your controller, but in an entirely different way than what their 2025 offense is set to be.

I do enjoy the comparison to CFB25's Alabama team. After all, Jalen Milroe was incredibly broken in the game due to his arm strength and ability as a runner. Mateer is similar in many ways. While he isn't as fast, he's pretty close, and he shrugs off would-be tacklers and sacks with ease.

Ott is a dynamite runner with game-breaking athleticism in the open field, and also breaks tackles with ease, forcing 123 missed tackles in the last two seasons. He is inarguably Oklahoma's most talented rusher since Joe Mixon.

The two of them, paired with Ben Arbuckle's unique, wide-open Air Raid/spread hybrid playbook, should make the Sooners a particularly fun team to operate next season, something that is the complete opposite of what their 2024 offense operated like. While I can't confirm that the two of them are rated higher than they finished in CFB25, I would be willing to bet they both are 90+ overalls come the release date.

When you add on other talents like Deion Burks, Jaren Kanak, Xavier Robinson, Taylor Tatum, Javonnie Gibson, and Isaiah Sategna, the bevy of athletic playmakers the Sooners have at their disposal in-game will make for some deep, unique offensive dynasties.
