The Oklahoma Sooners made a splash in the transfer portal when they pulled in running back Jaydn Ott from Cal. The former Freshman All-American chose the Sooners over several Power Four schools, including the Georgia Bulldogs.
Ott has already begun to turn heads at fall camp for the Oklahoma Sooners, with several sources and reports around the team remarking how "different" he looks compared to the other 'backs the Sooners have.
Part of Ott's decision-making process while in the transfer portal was a discussion with new Oklahoma offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle. During that discussion, Arbuckle detailed exactly how he planned to use Ott in his offense. Arbuckle had already squared off against Ott and distinctly remembered his ability as a triple-threat playmaker on offense.
"He talked about just getting me into space. His spread offense is really exciting…. Talking to him throughout this whole summer and throughout the whole recruiting process, there was a lot of clips like that that he was showing where he planned on moving me out wide and not just using me out of the backfield like a traditional running back. The game is changing and running backs have to be more versatile than ever, and that's what I bring to the room. Watching the guys this summer during OTAs and walkthroughs and stuff and throwing on the weekends with John and the other quarterbacks, you'll see a lot of the running backs being used out wide."
Arbuckle's vision, as well as a great relationship with John Mateer, sold Ott on the Sooners, and Oklahoma is fully embracing the dynamic talent.
The Sooners have already begun to feature Ott as a returner so far in fall camp, a good sign for their return game moving forward. Unlocking Ott as a three-down weapon could be the foundation they build the whole offense around for the 2025 season.
