One of the Oklahoma Sooners ' top players of the last couple of seasons, Gentry Williams, has caught an unfortunate injury bug, with him missing time in 2023 and virtually all of 2024. His injuries have been a problem dating back even to high school, when he missed his junior season with a knee injury.
Despite his injuries, Williams has shown tremendous playmaking ability when he is on the field, including making several key stops and interceptions in the Sooners' upset victory over Texas back in 2023. Despite playing in just 10 games, he finished second on the team in interceptions.
Despite his past injuries, Williams has remained healthy throughout the offseason and is looking forward to a season hopefully free of injury.
He's been an active and full participant so far in fall camp, and he seems primed to win the starting cornerback job opposite Eli Bowen when the Sooners kick off their 2025 season.
However, Williams won't be able to sleepwalk and rely on his past accomplishments. The battle at cornerback is a fierce one, with half a dozen serious competitors vying for the starting job and subsequent snaps.

His playmaking ability would be a boon for Oklahoma's secondary. His three interceptions that he tallied in 2023 would have led the team in 2024, even though the Sooners' defense was much better overall in 2024. Only two players tallied more than one interception last season for Oklahoma.
If Williams remains healthy for the 2025 season, Oklahoma's defense feels primed to go from elite to one of the top units in the country. The secondary was the only thing holding them back from crossing that threshold last season (even though they finished a respectable 34th in EPA/Pass). A fully healthy Williams at the CB2 spot solves one of the biggest questions remaining on the Sooners' roster.
