An Ole Miss Rebels assistant coach cost his team 15 yards by getting a bit too close to the sideline during a big play.

The Rebels found themselves in an unexpectedly difficult fight with the Washington State Cougars during Saturday’s game at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Oxford, Miss. With 2:29 to go in the fourth quarter, Ole Miss was nursing a 24-21 lead when quarterback Trinidad Chambliss connected with tight end Dae’Quan Wright for a 42-yard gain to the Washington State 33.

There was just one problem: an unidentified Ole Miss assistant got too close to the field and wiped out a referee during the play, leading to a 15-yard penalty that sent the Rebels back to the Cougars 48.

The coach wasn’t trying to make contact with the referee, but he was clearly in the restricted area. We have seen penalties like this called before, as the rules are pretty clear.

The Rebels failed to score on the drive, so it is entirely possible the foul cost them points. They wound up narrowly hanging on for a three-point win.
