Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin isn't happy about what's ahead for the Rebels and he let everyone know it

On Wednesday's SEC coaches teleconference, Ole Miss head coach Lane Kiffin was asked about the annual opponents for the Rebels now that the SEC has gone to a nine-game schedule starting in 2026.

Ole Miss will play LSU, Mississippi State, and Oklahoma every year starting next season. The Rebels' head coach had quite the response to the Sooners being added to the schedule for the next four years.

“Yeah, Oklahoma is really disappointing. We don’t have anything in common with them or our fans, so that doesn’t make any sense at all," Kiffin said. "And so that’s unfortunate with so many great teams that we’ve played for a long time here, especially from our SEC West years. So that’s unfortunate.”

Lane Kiffin expected the other two annual opponents.

"Obviously the Egg Bowl is staying so (the SEC) only had two choices. The LSU one makes sense, and that’s great, the other makes no sense.”

Ole Miss and Oklahoma have somehow only played twice in school history. Last year was just the second time now that the Sooners are a part of the SEC. The other was an instant classic in the 1999 Independence Bowl game. The Rebels have won both games.

Still, it's interesting to hear the head coach be so vocal about why he thinks the scheduling was a failure. Normally coaches say all the right things via coach speak and steer clear of stuff like this. But, Kiffin steered right into it and let people know how he feels.

Lane Kiffin was also asked about LSU and his QB battle.

“Really excited for this challenge. To play at home and for first place in the SEC and to play a top three team in the country in LSU is an awesome opportunity for us. So, got to continue to have a great week of preparation," Kiffin said. "These guys probably have the best roster, since we’ve been here, from top to bottom and we’re going to have to prepare and play really well.”

Chris Low reported Wednesday afternoon the expectation is for Trinidad Chambliss to start at quarterback Saturday versus the Tigers. But, the media still asked Kiffin about how he goes about filling out his availability report each week.

“I think you phrased it what led us to leaving him off (the report) and playing him when he was available. That’s why we left him off, because he was available," Kiffin said. "It is an availability report. It’s not a specific injury report. If a player’s available, he’s available and he was and played in the game.

“I’m going with what I was told by the league and how to operate on it. It’s an availability report and if a player is going to be available to play then they shouldn’t be on there. I’m following direct orders from the league.”
