Ole Miss QB Matt Corral carted off with ankle injury suffered in Sugar Bowl

The last game of Matt Corral's collegiate career ended in disaster with an ankle injury for the Ole Miss quarterback that eventually led to him being carted to the locker room.

Lane Kiffin provided a bit of good news after the game when he told reporters that the X-rays on Corral's ankle came back negative. However, he provided no further information about the severity of the injury and Kiffin spoke about how emotional it made him to see Corral get injured.

"That's obviously a difficult situation, especially when a kid's playing in the game, you know, so my mind raced with a lot of thoughts right there, you know, and that's just my love for him, just like I would if it was my own son in that situation," Kiffin said, via ESPN. "So you know, maybe I didn't do a great enough job with the team, because you know, I was really hurting for him in that situation because I know how much he's put into it, how much it means to him. And for that to be taken away like that, you know, it really sucks."

Corral finished his redshirt junior season at Ole Miss with 20 passing touchdowns and 11 rushing touchdowns. In November, he announced that a game against Vanderbilt would be his last at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium, presumably signaling that he planned to enter the 2022 NFL Draft. Kiffin seemingly confirmed that Corral was turning pro, telling reporters Saturday night that the quarterback "will make a great NFL player and do great for a franchise."

With Corral sidelined for the majority of the Sugar Bowl, Ole Miss turned to freshman Luke Altmyer for the remainder of the game. Altmyer completed 15 of his 29 passes for 174 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Baylor won the game, 21-7.
