Lane Kiffin and the No. 13 Ole Miss Rebels are expected to have quarterback Austin Simmons back for Saturday’s pivotal SEC clash with No. 4 LSU.
Ole Miss omitted Simmons, a first-year starter and former consensus four-star prospect, from Thursday’s availability report, hinting that he’ll suit up against the Tigers. Simmons injured his ankle against Kentucky earlier this month.
Ferris State transfer and two-time Division II national champion Trinidad Chambliss has started the Rebels’ last two games, leading Ole Miss to victories over Arkansas and Tulane. Chambliss is expected to start against the Tigers, with Simmons serving as the backup.
However, barring a disastrous performance against LSU, Kiffin has no reason to switch quarterbacks anytime soon. Chambliss has thrived in Kiffin and Charlie Weis Jr.’s high-octane offense, completing 67.7% of his passes for 719 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions in 62 attempts.
Chambliss has also impressed as a rusher, picking up 195 yards and two touchdowns on 5.4 yards per attempt.
As for Simmons, the third-year sophomore owns a 60.7% completion percentage, 580 yards, and a 4-4 TD-INT ratio. He’s also rushed for 69 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.
A win over LSU would likely push Ole Miss back into the top-10 since their 24-17 loss to Florida last November. The FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Rebels as -1.5 home favorites (-112, meaning a $100 bet nets a $189.29 payout) as of Friday morning.
