Ollie Gordon is One of the Standouts in Preseason Week 1

The Dolphins have been looking for a bigger, tougher running back for some time now.

In the Mike McDaniel era, that has been one of the major flaws of the team.

When they need a yard in a key situation, it has been hard to come by.

While the team added Alexander Mattison via free agency, they also drafted former Oklahoma State standout Ollie Gordon.

Through one week of the pre-season, it seems that Gordon was the right choice.

Along with a short rushing touchdown in the tie against the Bears, Gordon also had one of the best plays of the day.

On a simple inside zone run, Gordon broke a tackle, spun away from another defender, and earned 20 yards on the rush.

Pretty impressive for a rookie.

In another crucial situation on a fourth down late in the final period, Gordon caught a pass between two defenders and ran up the field into Bears’ territory.

While the play did not lead to points, it clearly showed Gordon’s potential both in the run and pass game.

It also emphasized why Miami took Gordon in the first place.

As noted earlier in the off-season, Gordon was one of the best running backs in the country in 2023.

Then, in his final season with the Cowboys in 2024, it seemed to go all downhill.

Yet, his stats were not entirely his fault, as they were trending downward.

For one, the team was not as good, which limited his carries late in games.

Second, his offensive line was not as strong year over year.

These factors limited his stats and performance and severely dropped his draft status.

Luckily for the Dolphins, they were able to snag Gordon late in the sixth round of April’s draft.

I know that it is just the pre-season, but if today was any indication, the Dolphins got a steal in Ollie Gordon.

They also might have found the perfect pairing to go alongside De’von Achane for years to come.
