There’s so much buildup for Arch Manning’s debut next season, some skepticism is warranted.
Remember, the redshirt freshman may be the oddsmakers’ favorite to win the Heisman Trophy. But it’s worth noting that Manning will be starting behind a rebuilt offensive line. And every play on tape is another play defensive coordinators can scrub for clues.
On3 went another step further and ranked the top five quarterbacks going into the 2025 season. It’s an intriguing list considering that Clemson’s Cade Klubnik is too low at No. 8 and Arizona State’s Sam Leavitt is too high at No. 1.
Manning is slotted fourth in On3’s list, which is respectable.

“Manning was good enough in his relief action at quarterback early in the 2024 season that there were at least some calls for him to take over as the starter late in the year,” On3’s Thomas Goldkamp wrote about his picks. “Steve Sarkisian stuck with Quinn Ewers, of course, but the luxury to have a backup as capable as Manning was unmistakable.
“The freshman phenom threw for 939 yards and nine touchdowns. He threw only two interceptions. He also ran for four scores. It’ll be the Arch Manning show at quarterback in 2025, so buckle up.”
The problem is that the rest of the list is so topsy-turvy that it’s hard to give this list any legitimacy.
Leavitt is ranked No. 1, but huge chunks of his yardage was generated by Cam Skattebo getting into open space, often coming out of the backfield.
Penn State’s Drew Allar is slotted second after leading the Nittany Lions to the Big Ten title game. Florida’s DJ Lagway, who bounced back from an injury last season, is ranked third.
“The Florida freshman was a revelation, taking over after Graham Mertz was lost for the season due to injury,” Goldkamp wrote. “And while there were growing pains, there were also clearly obvious markers that Lagway is going to be a stud in the future.”
South Carolina’s LeNorris Sellers was fifth.
The bottom half of the top 10 is interesting as there are more SEC names that will get fans’ attention, like No. 6 Garrett Nussmeier (LSU) and No. 7 Carson Beck (now at Miami).
How Klubnik is picked eighth is bewildering. Klubnik threw for 3,639 yards and had 36 touchdowns this season in leading the Tigers to the ACC championship. He had a terrific day against the Longhorns in the College Football Playoffs, throwing for almost 340 yards.
Eighth? He’s a top-three pick if there ever was one.
Oklahoma fans will perk up seeing that new quarterback transfer John Mateer was ranked ninth. The Sooners need something good to happen next season under coach Brent Venables.
Tennessee fans are likely going to be riled up seeing Nico Iamaleava ranked 10th.
“The Tennessee quarterback probably didn’t quite explode onto the scene the way many pundits expected after he was listed as a potential Heisman Trophy contender going into the season,” Goldkamp said. “Some of that was a result of an outstanding defense for the Volunteers; Iamaleava wasn’t asked to do too much.”
