One of the people who has to deal with John Mateer in the worst ways has the perfect acronym for him

Getting quarterback John Mateer in the transfer portal could end up being one of the best things that head coach Brent Venables has ever done during his tenure with the Oklahoma Sooners.

Just when things aren't looking too good for him and his job security, Venables goes out and gets the best overall player in the transfer portal, and add in that he's also a quarterback, a position the Sooners desperately needed an upgrade at, and it's that much more important that he made that move.

On top of that, he has the offensive coordinator that Mateer had in Washington State as his OC now. So, it was all smart and calculated by the Sooners. But, this move is huge for Venables because if things don't work out this year, we could see the now fourth-year head coach be let go by the end of the season.

And if things are as bad as they were last season, we could see him fired in the middle of the season. That's just the reality of being the head coach at Oklahoma, where, really, he shouldn't have even had two losing seasons in three years, considering they hadn't had one before that since the 1990s.

But, once again, just to reiterate it all, that's why Mateer is so important. And, apparently, he's been doing well in practice.

Quarterback John Mateer has his own acronym from one coach, and it isn't Brent Venables

Fall camp is just a few days away, which means we will only start to hear more and more about the Sooners' defense and offense as it pertains to how they are playing against each other.

And, with what the Sooners have seen so far, before fall camp, they already know how good Mateer is, so much so that he has his own acronym.

Todd Bates, the defensive line coach and a guy who has to gameplan for Mateer every practice, has created the acronym, My Attempt To Earn Everybody’s Respect, for Mateer. And that sounds about right.

You can see the way Mateer carries himself. Sure, he has a swagger about himself, and he knows how good he is. But he is also as humble as it gets, and he wants all of his teammates to trust and respect him.

The Sooners got a dog at quarterback through the transfer portal with John Mateer. Brent Venables certainly did the right thing there.
