Oregon head coach Dan Lanning and the rest of the football staff were met with some disappointing news on Friday when 2026 New Lenox (Ill.) Lincoln-Way East quarterback backed off of his commitment to the Ducks. The 6-1.5, 200-pound signal caller opted to flip his commitment to the USC Trojans.

Losing a four-star quarterback, especially one that is rated as the No. 93 overall player and No. 6 quarterback in the 2026 recruiting class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking, is a difficult loss on paper. Williams is fresh off of a junior season where he led Lincoln-Way East to a 12-1 record. He played previously at Bolingbrook, throwing for 70 touchdowns the previous two seasons.
It appears, however, that this might have actually been a tactical move. There is a growing belief out there that Oregon is positioning themselves for a huge 2026 quarterback splash. The Ducks are reportedly beginning to separate themselves for Nashville (Tenn.) Christian School signal caller Jared Curtis, who many believe to be the top quarterback in the class.
Curtis was previously committed to the Georgia Bulldogs but decided to reopen his commitment back in October. Georgia, along with the Ducks, Alabama, Auburn, and South Carolina are a few of the programs that are at the top of his list now. Oregon could have the inside track, and no quarterback conveniently in the class.
The 6-4, 225-pound signal caller is currently rated as the No. 2 overall player and No. 1 quarterback in the 2026 class according to the 247Sports Composite ranking. As a junior, Curtis threw for 2,830 yards and 40 touchdowns. Curtis also rushed for 637 yards and 18 more scores, while completing over 70 perfect of his passes and throwing just three interceptions.
If the Ducks do indeed land Curtis in the end, this Williams’ news will begin making a lot more sense. There is a tactical feel to this recent news. From the sound of it, elite news might be on the horizon.
