Josh Conerly Jr., OT, Oregon
Height: 6'4
Weight: 315
Strengths:
-
Frame: Josh Conerly definitely looks the part of an NFL-caliber offensive tackle. He carries his weight well on his frame and he possesses NFL length. He's got a pretty chiseled physique all told.
-
Athleticism: Conerly's athleticism is awesome. He's such an easy and gifted mover
Weaknesses:
-
Play Strength: The biggest concern of mine with Conerly is his play strength. I think it's well below average, which simply won't play in the NFL. He gets bullied simply way too often, especially for a player in his third season at a major college program. It was a problem of his entering the season, and it hasn't improved this year.
-
Inconsistency: It's frustrating to watch Conerly bounce between games where he goes from a promising prospect to a pretty mid-tier player. He's had some good games, like against Michigan State, but against Idaho and Boise State, his film was downright poor. The tools are there, but his footwork varies from drop to drop, limiting his ability on any given set.
Player Evaluation:
Josh Conerly Jr. is a purely theoretical upside pick. The tools and framework are there for him to be a starting-caliber tackle in the NFL, but he needs plenty more seasoning and development before he hits that. He's a high-ceiling, low-floor prospect for right now, which might be enough in an iffy offensive tackle class at the top.
Player Comparison:
D.J. Humphries
Both Humphries and Conerly were decorated five-star recruits who were able to carry their recruiting status with them to the NFL Draft. The two of them are high-level athletes who struggle with inconsistent technique but possess all the tools a team could want.
A to Z Rankings:
A to Z Big Board Ranking: #49 overall, #6 offensive tackle
A to Z Draft Grade: 7.91
Draft Projection: Second-Third Round
