Paul Finebaum: Jim Harbaugh to LA Chargers would be ‘best landing spot’

The best landing spot for Jim Harbaugh is the Los Angeles Chargers according to ESPN’s Paul Finebaum.

Harbaugh was scheduled to interview with the franchise Monday, just a week after leading the Michigan Wolverines to a national title. The link between the two sides has been rumored since Brandon Staley was fired by the team.

If Harbaugh is to leave for the NFL, there is no better spot than LA for the Michigan head coach.

“I think this is his best landing spot,” Finebaum said Monday on SportsCenter. “It’s ironic, two weeks ago at this moment he was out in Pasadena a few yards away from where he is now, last Monday night winning the championship. And here he is doing what almost everyone expected him to do: take an NFL job. And this has been the one everyone has pointed toward especially because of the quarterback matchup.”

Finebaum alluded to Justin Herbert, who’s lit it up since the Chargers drafted him out of Oregon. However, LA missed the playoffs this season after collapsing in last year’s AFC Wild Card game.

Harbaugh once coached the San Francisco 49ers with great success over four seasons, but ultimately didn’t see eye-to-eye with the front office. It led to his departure and return to his alma mater. 

Jim Harbaugh to the Chargers?

Can he do something similar, if not better with the Chargers?

Many seem to think it is possible. There are plenty of other vacancies, but it looks like the Chargers have Harbaugh as their top target.

Obviously, Michigan won’t let Harbaugh leave without a fight as president Santa Ono is desperately trying to sign him to a new long term contract.

“I believe he has [made it better], and he’s a Michigan Wolverine through and through,” Ono said, via The Wolverine. “He was a quarterback here, as you know. He learned from Bo Schembechler … didn’t play for the first couple years, broke his arm. But the most important thing for me is him as a human being. He’s guided by Lord Jesus Christ. 

“He’s going to think about what he wants to do with his life. I respect that, support him, love his family. I hope he stays. I’m going to do everything I can to encourage him to stay, but if he doesn’t, the Michigan tradition will move on.”

Harbaugh is 86-25 at Michigan and 144-52 overall in college. While with the 49ers, Harbaugh went 44-19-1, going to three NFC Championship games and Super Bowl XLVII.
