The Georgia Bulldogs are among the top programs in college football. Under head coach Kirby Smart, Georgia has participated in three College Football Playoffs since 2020.
The Bulldogs achieved consecutive national championships in 2021 and 2022. In 2023, they aimed for their first-ever three-peat by finishing the regular season undefeated. However, their hopes were dashed when they lost to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game, eliminating them from playoff contention.
Last season, they made the playoffs but were defeated in the quarterfinals by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. On "The Paul Finebaum Show," the SEC Network analyst explained his hesitation to fully support Georgia this season.
"Georgia, to me, has a manageable schedule," Finebaum said. Can they produce offensively?"
Finebaum believes Georgia will have a strong season, but he is uncertain about its playoff prospects.
“I think a good year,” Finebaum previously said. “Maybe a little bit hard to predict in terms of the playoffs, but I think 10-2 sounds about right. Depending on the momentum in late December, how far can they go?”
Finebaum noted that having two losses in a season isn’t necessarily a disaster; however, he raised concerns about the significance of those losses and their timing during the season. Last year, Georgia lost two regular-season games—one against the Alabama Crimson Tide and another against the Ole Miss Rebels. Still, the Bulldogs made the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff.
The key story regarding the offense is the talent of Gunner Stockton, who is taking over for Carson Beck after his transfer to the Miami Hurricanes this offseason. Finebaum has expressed doubts about Stockton's ability to lead the Bulldogs to a national championship.
“My answer is no,” Finebaum previously said. “I don’t have a lot of faith in Gunner Stockton. The better question is, do I have more faith in Gunner Stockton today than I did in Stetson Bennett four or five years ago? I probably do. So, it’s proven that Georgia, if it has an elite defense and enough complements on offense, can get there.”
Stockton starts the 2025 season with limited playing experience, having participated in only five games in the previous season. During those games, he threw for a total of 440 yards and one touchdown. Most of his contributions came during the SEC Championship Game and the College Football Playoff loss, which followed Beck's season-ending injury.
Stockton played a crucial role in leading the Bulldogs to an overtime victory against the Texas Longhorns, clinching the SEC title after stepping in for Beck, who was injured in the first half.
The Bulldogs claimed a 22-19 victory, capped by Stockton’s 8-yard run on second-and-8 from the 12-yard line during overtime. On the next play, Trevor Etienne scored the game-winning touchdown with a four-yard rush.
Georgia faced a tough playoff quarterfinal against Notre Dame, losing 23-10, and struggled offensively throughout the game. Stockton completed 20-of-32 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown.
Georgia will begin the season against the Marshall Thundering Herd at 3:30 p.m. ET on August 30.
