Penn State All 105: After Injury-Riddled Season, Trey Wallace Looking to be a Force

There were a lot of reasons Penn State football’s receivers, as a whole, didn’t perform up to par in 2023, and Trey Wallace not being healthy for much of the season was one of them.

Getting the start Week 1 against West Virginia under the Beaver Stadium lights, Wallace played well, catching seven passes for 72 yards.

Unfortunately, Wallace only played in seven of Penn State’s remaining 12 games due to injuries.

If Wallace is healthy, he could be a big part of a receivers room resurgence under new OC Andy Kotelnicki, and that will be needed for Penn State to reach its team goals in 2024.

Before Penn State: Trey Wallace was a two-time team captain at Pike Road High School and was the team MVP for both his junior and senior seasons.

As a junior, he was an all-state performer. As a senior, he helped his team to a 10-1 record. That year, he caught 27 passes for 696 yards and seven touchdowns. He also ran the ball 13 times for 115 yards and a score. Wallace was a four-star recruit according to 247Sports. He initially committed to Duke. But he flipped to Penn State in December, not long before Early Signing Day.

2021: Wallace redshirted the 2021 season and appeared in three games.

2022: Wallace played in all 13 games. He ended the year with 19 catches for 273 yards and a touchdown. Wallace started Penn State’s last three games— including its Rose Bowl win over Utah— after regular starter Parker Washington went down with a season-ending injury.

Last year: Wallace ended the season with 273 yards and a touchdown on 19 receptions.

Where he stands: As of now, Wallace is slated to be Penn State’s No. 2 receiver behind Julian Fleming, who transferred this January after four seasons at Ohio State. Wallace showed in that West Virginia game that, when healthy, he can be a capable No. 2. Now, we’ll see if his health holds up and, if so, if he can maintain consistently solid form throughout the 2024 season.
