Penn State has become a running back factory. Saquon Barkley. Miles Sanders. Now Nick Singleton and Kaytron Allen. James Franklin's Nittany Lions continue to develop stud running backs. It's no wonder they've already locked in a five star commit at running back in the 2027 recruiting class. Unfortunately, he doesn't seem too overcommitted to Penn State at the moment.
Kemon Spell, a five star running back from McKeesport, PA (just two and a half hours from Penn State's stadium), has been committed to James Franklin and company since August of last season, but he continues to rack up scholarship offers and interest from the top programs around the country–and for good reason.
Spell racked up about 1,700 rushing yards, averaging nearly 11 yards per carry last fall as one of the most explosive offensive weapons in the country, and he did so as a sophomore. He is clearly–and by a mile–the best running back recruit in the 2027 class. Penn State will certainly want to hold onto him, but that will be tough.
Most coaches and fans understand that it's fine for young up and coming recruits to visit other campuses throughout their recruiting journey, but should Penn State fans be worried? Kemon Spell has set four official visits for this fall already, one of which is with Penn State. However, he's also visiting Notre Dame (who will likely send Jeremiyah Love on to the first round of the NFL Draft next spring), Florida State, and Alabama.

With Jeremiyah Love and perhaps Jadarian Price both leaving Notre Dame after this season for the NFL Draft, Notre Dame will have quite the pitch to make for Spell. They could have a feature back opportunity ready for him in 2027. Plus, Kyren Williams is currently shredding the NFL, Notre Dame has sent four running backs to the league in the last decade, and they're about to send one or two more.
Alabama had become "Running Back University" there for a while alongside Georgia for much of the previous decade, with plenty of current NFL talent still producing.
Florida State has sent plenty of talent to the pros, but they just haven't done as much when they get there (with the exception of Dalvin Cook)
Penn State fans may have at least something to worry about here with losing Spell. However, given the likely available opportunity and proven development that James Franklin and his staff can sell is at least equal to or greater than any other program that seems to be competing for Spell's interest, things still look pretty safe.
Hopefully these are just fun tourism trips for Spell more than anything. And if Penn State dominates like they should this fall, fans shouldn't really worry about losing his commitment. The program is in a better place than it's been in thirty years.
