There wasn’t any problem against Nevada.
Penn State quarterback Drew Allar was sharp, the defense was great, and there wasn’t a lick of drama in the 46-11 layup of a win. It wasn’t a perfect performance, though.
It’s nitpicking, but the Nittany Lions weren't great on the ground. They have this week to start pounding away, and another easy date against Villanova, and then comes the Big Ten opener against Oregon.
FIU was fantastic in the first game under new head coach Willie Simmons, beating Bethune-Cookman 42-9. Up next is the Florida Atlantic team Penn State just drilled.

Can the offense possibly be as good and be almost as dangerous as it was against an FCS team? No - obviously, Penn State’s defense is going to be a problem, but the Panthers have pieces.
Keyone Jenkins is a dangerous playmaker of a quarterback, the running game ripped off yards in chunks last week, and overall, the attack was almost perfectly balanced.
And, again, the Penn State running game has to get in gear. There weren’t any long, gashing runs against Nevada, Nicholas Singleton was bottled up - two scores aside - and in this, FIU has to sell out early on to try making big plans. But …
Of course the Nittany Lions can run, and this is where they start to show it.
Allar was outstanding in the opener, hitting 22-of-26 passes for 217 yards and a touchdown. He had time, was decisive, and he should be able to pick apart the FIU secondary at will.
Nevada has an improved offense that should be okay in the Mountain West, and Penn State shut it down dead cold. FIU will try to move quickly, but the running that worked so well last week won’t do anything in Happy Valley.
Again, there’s obviously no real concern with the ground game, but Penn State will get that out of the way on the first few drives. Last week was about getting Allar going, and this week will be for the offensive line to get into a lather.
