Pitt held its intrasquad draft at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex Wednesday afternoon, and teams are now set for the 2024 Blue-Gold Spring Game.
Pitt will hold its annual spring game Saturday at Acrisure Stadium, with kickoff set for 2 p.m., and it will pit the Blue team against the Gold team in the last of the Panthers’ spring practices. It’s the last chance to see the Pitt squad in action before the season opener against Kent State on Aug. 31.
The Gold team started the draft off on the right foot as Donovan McMillon defeated Brandon George in a battle of rock-paper-scissors (and a coin toss), and Gold picked first. Kenny Johnson received the honor of first overall pick.
The Blue team will be led by Jacob Bronowski and the Gold team will be led by Archie Collins. Brandon George, Ben Sauls, Nate Matlack and Konata Mumpfield are the Blue captains, and Gavin Bartholomew, Daniel Carter, Rashad Battle and Donovan McMillon are the Gold captains.
Not every player was drafted though. The seniors were distributed strategically across the two teams (as were the offensive linemen), and the Blue received Jahvante Royal, Nate Matlack, Bam Brima, Brandon George, P.J. O’Brien Jr., Solomon DeShields (out) and Konata Mumpfield, Dorien Ford (out), Rodney Hammond Jr. (out), Terrence Moore (out) and Poppi Williams (out), while the Gold received Rashad Battle, Dayon Hayes, Will King, Luke DelGaudio, Daniel Carter, Gavin Bartholomew, Jake McConnachie, Tamon Lynum (out), Nate Temple (out), Keye Thompson (out), Ryan Jacoby (out) and Branson Taylor (out).
Here’s how the intrasquad Pitt draft unfolded. It wasn’t a traditional draft either. Once a player from a particular Pitt position group was selected, the two sides picked from that particular group before picking from another. So, when Johnson was selected, all the X wide receivers had to be selected next.
