Price of Ashton Jeanty getting jersey number revealed

Joining the Las Vegas Raiders, Ashton Jeanty faced a problem that faces many rookies coming into the NFL.

At Boise State, the superstar running back was nicknamed “Deuce” for his No. 2 on his jersey. However, the jersey number was already used by Raiders All-Pro kicker Daniel Carlson. If Jeanty wanted to wear the same number, he would have to go through the standard rookie practice of negotiating a deal with the veteran.

Jeanty did ultimately get his preferred number, and he has now disclosed what the price was.

Jeanty had to pay a heavy price to get his No. 2 back from Carlson.

On the Up & Adams Show, Jeanty did not disclose the exact price he had to pay Carlson for his number, but his comparisons suggest the veteran kicker did not give him a rookie discount.

“You could probably buy a house, like a nice-sized house—actually no I’m not gonna say a house. I’m gonna say a car like a nice Mercedes, you could buy a Mercedes GLE,” said Jeanty.

A new Mercedes GLE can cost anywhere from $60,000 to $150,000, so Jeanty certainly had to pay up to make the deal happen. While the price definitely causes some sticker shock, it is a little easier to manage when Jeanty’s rookie contract pays him a fully guaranteed $8.9 million per year.

Jeanty said that the Raiders’ equipment manager helped facilitate the deal, and the running back also confirmed that a portion of the payment would go to charity.

For Jeanty, it was a fair deal to acquire a number that meant so much to him.

“It’s the day greatness was born, the day I was born, December 2nd. It’s a family number. All my family members who played sports wore No. 2,” the running back said.

Jeanty definitely had it tough negotiating with Carlson, but he at least gets to wear his known jersey number again.
