College football finds itself in a strange and evolving place at the moment. While the sport may be more popular than ever from a fan’s perspective, it’s undergoing drastic changes on the player, coach, and business fronts. With the rise of the NCAA transfer portal and NIL deals, the dynamics of the game are shifting at a rapid pace.
Many teams have used these changes to their advantage, being highly active in the portal and positioning themselves for success in the 2025 season.
However, not every program has benefited equally. One team that has been hit particularly hard is the Washington State Cougars, who find themselves in an extremely tough spot as they try to navigate a rapidly changing landscape.
The Cougars remain a part of the Pac-12, a conference that is in the process of rebuilding, with some programs already making significant moves to retool their rosters. Washington State is facing an uphill battle after losing a staggering 36 players to the transfer portal this offseason — the most of any FBS program, according to On3.
Lots of former players ending up at big time schools:

Ansel Din-Mbuh ➡️ TCU
Nick Haberer ➡️ Vandy
Durham Harris ➡️ Vandy
AJ Hasson ➡️ WF
Ethan O’Connor ➡️ Miami…
The departure of star quarterback John Mateer, who transferred to Oklahoma, has been the prominent loss. But that’s just one of many. Several of Washington State's players followed their former head coach, Jake Dickert, to Wake Forest after he took the Deacons' head coaching job this offseason.
In the meantime, new head coach Jimmy Rogers, who signed a five-year deal to become the 35th head coach in program history, has his work cut out for him. His task is now to rebuild the Cougars’ roster and stabilize a program in a state of flux, especially as Washington State navigates an uncertain future in a rapidly shifting conference landscape.
Yet, there remains a significant number of players still undecided in the portal, some of whom are from Washington State, leaving the door open for potential returns. It will certainly be interesting to see how the team is structured when the Cougars take the field in 2025 under Rogers' leadership.
