Bobby Engstler, a punter from Tallahassee, Fla., has de-committed from Florida and committed to Cal. Engstler made his announcement on social media on Tuesday.
Engstler would have been a walk-on at Florida, and he also attracted interest from Mississippi as a walk-on candidate. But Engstler says on his twitter announcement that Cal offered him a full scholarship, and he joins the Bears' class of 2024.
He attends Lawton Chiles High School, which is in Leon County, Florida, just north of Tallahassee.
Jamieson Sheahan has been the Golden Bears' punter the past three seasons, and was second in the Pac-12 in punting average in 2023. The 25-year-old Jamieson had a year of college eligibility remaining, but opted to declare for the 2024 NFL draft.
Sheahan was second in the Pac-12 and 14th nationally in 2022 when he averaged 45.1 yards per punt average. He was the second consecutive Cal punter from Australia following Steven Coutts. Both prepped at ProKick.
But Engstler will travel across the country to attend Cal.
Engstler also did place-kicking in high school, although Cal signed a transfer from North Carolina, Ryan Coe, to be its kicker next season.
Engstler attended the Kohl's Professional Camps, which provided an assessment of his skills.
