When Bill O'Brien was named head coach of the Boston College Eagles, there was hope that he could restore the program to prominence.

Boston College hadn't experienced a double-digit win season since Matt Ryan was the quarterback in 2007. Since then, the Eagles have faced six seasons with non-winning records. Jeff Hafley, who led the team to a 22-26 record during his tenure, was succeeded by O'Brien. This appointment marked O'Brien's return to the college football ranks; he previously served as the head coach of the Penn State Nittany Lions in 2012 and 2013, where he compiled a 15-9 record.

In his first year at Boston College, O'Brien guided the team to a 7-6 record, following a strong start of 4-1. However, this season has not been going well. On the "College GameDay Podcast," Rece Davis shared that the situation in Chestnut Hill is quite bleak right now.

"Bill O'Brien was praised for the wonderful job that he did at Penn State and deservedly so, years ago," Davis said. "They're a mess at Boston College. There were probably people who said, 'Bill O'Brien did more with less, what would he do with all of this?' Well, it's not going well right now and it seemed like it was going to."

The Eagles have started the season with a record of 1-4. They kicked things off with a dominating 66-10 victory over the Fordham Rams from the FCS. However, they have since lost four consecutive games, all against Power Four opponents. These losses include a closely contested 42-40 defeat on the road against the Michigan State Spartans, a 30-20 loss on the road against the Stanford Cardinal, a 28-24 setback at home against the California Golden Bears, and a 48-7 loss on the road against the Pittsburgh Panthers.

The biggest surprise for O'Brien's club this year has been the poor performance of the offense. O'Brien built a strong reputation as an offensive genius during his time as the New England Patriots' offensive coordinator and with Tom Brady. However, Boston College ranks No. 64 in total offense, No. 10 in passing offense and a disappointing No. 131 in rushing offense.

O’Brien’s tenure at Boston College is rapidly approaching a crossroads. His reputation as an offensive mastermind hasn’t translated on the field, as the Eagles continue to struggle with efficiency and consistency. Despite flashes of promise in the passing game, the ground attack has fallen flat.

With a 1-4 record and frustration growing among fans, Boston College’s path forward will depend on O’Brien’s ability to rally the team and rediscover offensive balance. The Eagles will look to spark a turnaround when they host the Clemson Tigers on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. ET on the ACC Network.
