This is the time of the year when high school recruiting gets extremely chaotic. That leads to second guessing and changed minds. Michigan and Ole Miss dealt with that on Tuesday when both schools suffered decommitments.

First to decommit was three-star linebacker Jiyez Fleming (Oxford, Al.), who had been committed to Ole Miss since September. He remained committed through Lane Kiffin’s departure, but on Tuesday announced that he will be looking for a new home.

Fleming is a physical 6-foot-0, 218-pound linebacker known for his high motor and instincts. His decision to decommit was reportedly a “careful consideration” to find the best fit for his long-term growth both as a player and a man.

His most recent P4 offer was from Virginia Tech in mid-February.

Michigan’s decommitment came from four-star safety Darrell Mattison (Chicago, Ill.), who was new head coach Kyle Whittingham’s first commitment in Ann Arbor a little more than a month ago.

Ironically, a recent visit to Ole Miss quickly led to rumors that his commitment to the Wolverines was wavering. Those rumors became reality on Tuesday night when he reopened his process. A flip to the Rebels in the near future would be far from surprising.

This leaves Michigan with five commitments, three of which have come since Coach Whittingham’s arrival. While the Wolverines are in play for several top-level prospects, it has been a somewhat bumpy recruiting start for his first class in Ann Arbor.

While both Ole Miss and Michigan took a loss on Tuesday, the Wolverines’ loss may end up being a Rebels’ gain. Recruiting losses will happen, so it is important to rebound quickly, which is what Ole Miss is poised to do.
