Update: It’s official

Penn State probably won’t have a quarterback controversy coming into the 2025 season because Drew Allar has every intention of coming back.

Per a report by ESPN’s Pete Thamel late Monday morning, Allar has informed his coaches that he plans to return to Penn State for his last season of eligibility in 2025.

When backup QB Beau Pribula announced Sunday night that he was entering the transfer portal, many took that as a strong indicator that Allar would be returning.

It didn’t take long for those theories to be confirmed. This is a big win for Penn State, which now has a guy who figures to be the one of the best QBs in the country back in the fold.

THIS IS A BIG DEAL

Allar is somewhat of a polarizing figure amongst Penn State fans. Although most would agree that he’s put up good numbers over two seasons: 46 touchdowns, nine interceptions and a 21-5 overall record—, the fact that he came in as a five-star meant that the expectations were through the roof for the pride of Medina, Ohio. This meant that anything short of near perfection— specifically against Michigan and Ohio State, who Allar is 0-3 against so far— would be deemed by a portion of Penn State fans to be not good enough.

Regardless, every Penn State fan should be happy to have Allar back.

WHY HE CAME BACK

Allar will explain why he came back to reporters at roughly 12:50 Monday at a media availability that had been scheduled before news broke of Allar coming back to Penn State. But the early thought many share is that he wants to improve his draft standing. Draft expert Mel Kiper Jr. has Allar as the fourth-best QB in the 2025 Draft, meaning he would likely not go in the first round.

With a quality season in 2025, he’d likely be a surefire first-round pick.
