Report: SEC to use Dec. 19, day of league title game, for make-ups

It appears multiple Southeastern Conference football games will occur on Dec. 19.

ESPN's Heather Dinich is reporting that, as expected, SEC presidents and chancellors have approved Dec. 19 as a make-up date for contests postponed due to coronavirus-related reasons even though the league title game occurs that same day.

The news comes in the wake of the postponements of four conference games scheduled for Saturday because of COVID-19 issues within multiple programs. However, the Alabama Crimson Tide-LSU Tigers showdown could be difficult to reschedule because Alabama sits in first place in the West and appears headed toward the SEC Championship.

LSU and Alabama don't share an open date over the next four weeks. The Tigers are facing the Florida Gators on Dec. 12 after that game was pushed back in October.

Both SEC commissioner Greg Sankey and Big 12 commissioner Bob Bowlsby admitted this week that the College Football Playoff currently set to begin on Jan. 1 may have to be delayed and rescheduled.

"We're all going to have to be flexible," Sankey told reporters on Wednesday. "So I'm not going to hypothesize about change, but I'm not inattentive to the potential that change may need to occur."

Meanwhile, Bowlsby spoke with Sirius XM Radio about the matter on Thursday.

"I am on the CFP operations committee, and we spent some time talking about that," Bowlsby said. "We have not come to any closure on it, but there is some latitude to postpone it if that need should arise."

He continued:

"I don't know if I see us playing a championship game in February, but you just never know. These are unusual times, and things that might not otherwise be acceptable have to be considered in this kind of circumstance."
