REPORT: Travaris Robinson declines Alabama’s DC position
Kim Klement-USA TODAY Sports

After hopes of a quick turnaround from Athens back to Tuscaloosa, former Alabama defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson appears to be committed to joining Kirby Smart in Georgia.

A report from ESPN’s Chris Low stated that Robinson has decided to remain with the Bulldogs as the co-defensive coordinator/safeties coach. Robinson had met with new Crimson Tide head coach Kalen DeBoer on Sunday for several hours with discussions around him becoming the team’s defensive coordinator until Robinson ultimately passed.

Robinson was the first current Nick Saban staffer to leave the team after the six-time national champion announced his retirement last Wednesday. Robinson was announced to join Smart’s staff just hours before DeBoer was introduced as the 28th head coach at Alabama last Saturday.

DeBoer, who is expected to be bringing along several staff members from Washington, is also emphasizing the importance of adding coaches with SEC experience. DeBoer is already expected to be retaining defensive line coach Freddie Roach and running backs coach Robert Gillespie from Saban’s staff in 2023.

Robinson would have been a strong addition to the returning members due to his experience as a defensive coordinator in the SEC along with his impressive track record of recruiting.

But DeBoer and Alabama will now be going back to the drawing board as he continues the mad dash to fill his coaching staff.
