Rich Rodriguez Updates Mountaineers’ QB Competition

West Virginia’s quarterback competition is heading into its decisive stretch.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez spoke after fall camp’s second scrimmage and gave a measured update on where things stand. He made it clear that if one quarterback had completely separated himself, the decision would already be obvious, but that has not happened yet.

Rodriguez explained, “If you had a guy clearly separate and you’re like, ‘he’s it,’ I would maybe know that myself. But there’s no reason for me to say that. It may happen. It may not happen. I kind of think I know where we’re at. I watched today’s practice, and I’m really going to have to evaluate all week about what our true order is. You can only play one at a time. I have an idea where they’re at right now, and I’m seeing if somebody will separate in the next six, seven days.”

That statement reflects what many expected. The staff is holding out for one of the quarterbacks to create clarity through performance. Rodriguez has been consistent in saying that the film will dictate the decision rather than outside noise.

The competition remains between several names, including Max Brown, Jaylen Henderson, and Nicco Marchiol. Each brings a different profile to the field. Brown offers size and athleticism, Henderson has starting experience from his time at Texas A&M, and Marchiol has familiarity with the program after multiple years in Morgantown. Rodriguez has not tipped his hand toward one player but has acknowledged that the separation period must come soon.

West Virginia opens its season against Robert Morris, and the starter for that game will set the tone for the year. Rodriguez is signaling that a decision is close, and if someone takes command in practice this week, the Mountaineers will have their answer.
