Rick Neuheisel hasn't coached at the college football level since his stint as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins from 2008-11, but he has still been around the game.
The former UCLA and Colorado coach has been working as an analyst for CBS Sports since, while also hosting a radio show for Sirius XM. While it's been well over a decade since he last coached, his son and former UCLA quarterback, Jerry Neuheisel, has burst onto the scene as one of the brightest young offensive minds in college football.
The younger Neuheisel shined as the play-caller this season for the Bruins and the previous offensive coordinator, Tino Sunseri, parted ways. He helped lead UCLA to an upset win over No. 7 Penn State en route to what was a three-game winning streak after starting the season 0-4.
While Neuheisel has emerged as a hot candidate as an offensive coordinator as the season winds down, he and his father may have a chance to work together.
As reported by John Canzano, the elder Neuheisel has reportedly been in contact with Washington State after head coach Jimmy Rogers left for the Iowa State opening.
"Rick Neuheisel and Washington State interim athletic director Jon Haarlow have had some preliminary contact about the job vacancy left by Jimmy Rogers, I’m told," wrote Canzano.
Canzano also confirmed that the younger Neuheisel could be a part of the staff as the offensive coordinator with a potential "succession plan" for him to take over for his father.
For Washington State, this route could be the best way to ensure continuity, as the program's next hire will be its fourth different head coach since 2019. The Cougars went 6-6 in Rogers' lone season, and with the Pac-12 poised to be the top Group of Six conference next season, his replacement has a chance to contend for the College Football Playoff immediately.
