Clemson’s first game week under new defensive coordinator Tom Allen brought some lighter moments during the Tigers weekly media press conference. Allen, who joined Clemson this offseason, shared a glimpse into his pregame preparations — including a unique trial run down “The Hill” at Memorial Stadium.
“I practiced running down The Hill last night,” Allen said with a laugh. “The goal is for no one to notice me.” His route, he explained, is a bit more complicated than the typical sprint. After descending The Hill, Allen has to cross the field, hop into a golf cart, and make his way to the press box before the Tigers defense takes the field.
Allen admitted he approached the run gingerly. “I didn’t do the Dabo Swinney sprint. I think I would’ve face-planted,” he joked.
For this season, Allen confirmed he’ll be coaching from the press box rather than on the field. “The technology is good enough that you can communicate down to the field,” he said. “Plus, I haven’t coached this defense before. Being up in the box gives me a better vantage point to evaluate things.”
Allen is also looking forward to experiencing Clemson’s home environment for the first time. “I’m excited to see Clemson rocking Saturday night,” he said. “I’ve never coached here before, so just being part of that energy will be special.”
Even with a new setting and a more strategic approach to his pregame routine, Allen’s excitement for his first Clemson game was clear — along with a sense of humor about the challenges of navigating The Hill.
