Ryan Day knows just how important "The Game" is if you're the head coach at Ohio State. Nothing else matters if you can't take care of business against Michigan.
Day has a 1-3 record against Michigan, winning his first meeting in blowout fashion before dropping three straight. Coming into this weekend, he knew his team would be a massive betting favorite over its bitter rival. However, he wasn't interested in the points spread. He knows that doesn't matter when it's a game of this magnitude.
“The minute someone says the Wolverines have bad players, you’re out of your mind,” Day said. “They got excellent players, like you just said. They’ve had some quarterback issues, but quarterback can get fixed in a game. So I guarantee you there’s too much respect in that locker room at Ohio State. I know the coaching staff … You just work your tail off and find a way to win this game. So regardless of what the media says, the point spread, it doesn’t matter.”
While Day is certainly saying all the right things, his team isn't doing enough to please the fans in Columbus. Despite being huge favorites, the Buckeyes are tied with the Wolverines at halftime.
If Day truly wants to keep his job for the 2025 season and beyond, Ohio State has to come out strong in the second half and win this game. A fourth consecutive loss to Michigan would be simply unacceptable.
Luckily for Day, he's got time to go into the locker room and make some adjustments.
Ohio State may want to steer clear of giving TreVeyon Henderson a ton of work on the ground in the second half. He's averaging just 1.3 yards per carry. Besides, the offense is having way more success airing out the football.
The second half of "The Game" will resume on FOX. It's not an exaggeration to say the next 30 minutes will be the most important stretch of Day's career.
