Alabama football’s quarterback, Ty Simpson has coughed up the football in five straight games.
Simpson’s fumble against the Oklahoma Sooners came at an inopportune time in the Tide’s loss. He fumbled the ball with 50 seconds left in the third quarter, giving the Sooners an opportunity to put three points on the board and take the lead in the fourth quarter.
This is a trend Simpson has to put an end to. Alabama’s offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb was asked what his message to Simpson was on the multiple fumbles and what the quarterback needs to do to correct this part of his game.
“Take care of the ball in the back-end of the pocket, two-handed monster,” Grubb said. “The message all week that Ty knows and was frustrated about was, kind of get the ball out of his hand. And then understanding when your back gets chewed up in protection, what’s going on with the route concept and where to put the ball. And Ty knows that. He beat himself up more than anybody.”
Simpson was asked about what contributed to him fumbling and throwing an interception after the game.
“They brought some stuff that we hadn’t seen before,” Simpson said. “I got to do a better job of taking caring of the ball. I think we all need to do a better job of taking care of the ball on offense because that’s what killed us. I don’t think they had any turnovers. We had three.”
Simpson will look to correct his turnover issues and get back to being able to consistently take care of the football this week at practice.
