Ryan Williams Names the 'Frontrunner' in Alabama's QB Battle Without Hesitation

The Alabama Crimson Tide's quarterback battle is heating up, but according to star wide receiver Ryan Williams, there’s already a clear frontrunner. The freshman standout didn’t hesitate when asked about the competition, naming one guy as the leader heading into the summer.

“I just feel like, um, and I mean the tape speaks for itself,” Williams said on ESPN’s College GameDay Podcast. “We have three very good quarterbacks and I mean either way that it goes, I’m comfortable and confident in any of those guys just because I’ve seen the work that they put in. They all have different tendencies, but uh, you know, like you said, Ty Simpson is the frontrunner right now.”

Simpson, a former five-star recruit, has been battling with Washington transfer Austin Mack and freshman Keelon Russell for the starting job. While all three quarterbacks have shown flashes, Simpson’s experience and command of the offense have given him the edge.

Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb echoed Williams’ sentiment, saying that if the Crimson Tide had to play a game tomorrow, Simpson would be the starter. “He earned that,” Grubb said, reinforcing the idea that Simpson has separated himself from the pack.

With Jalen Milroe off to the NFL, Alabama is looking for stability at the position. Simpson, who has spent three seasons in Tuscaloosa, has the most familiarity with the system and has been praised for his leadership throughout spring practices.

The battle isn’t over yet, but if Williams’ assessment holds true, Simpson is in prime position to take the reins when Alabama opens the season against Florida State on August 30.
