Sam Leavitt’s had one of the more unusual portal stints we’ve seen this cycle, but it looks like things are starting to take shape. The former Arizona State quarterback is headed to Miami for a visit, and it’s not just any trip. He’ll be in South Florida while the Hurricanes are getting ready to play for a national title against Indiana. It’s rare timing, and for a player like Leavitt, it could be the spark his portal process needed.
Leavitt entered the portal with an incredible resume, throwing for nearly 2,900 yards and 24 touchdowns in 2024 while helping Arizona State win the Big 12 and make a run to the Playoff. Last season was a bit bumpier. He played just seven games after suffering a foot injury, but still managed to throw for over 1,600 yards and 10 scores before going down. That kind of production should’ve made him one of the hottest names on the board, but things just didn’t move the way people expected.
He’s been linked to a bunch of programs. LSU, Kentucky, and Tennessee were all in the mix at some point, but no one closed the deal. That’s part of what makes this Miami visit interesting. They’re in the middle of the best run the program’s had in decades, and their quarterback room is about to get a reset. Carson Beck’s done after the title game, and the Hurricanes need a new leader to step in right away. That’s exactly what Leavitt’s looking for.
The setup makes sense for both sides. Miami gets a chance to bring in a proven guy who’s played in big games and has the arm talent to run a high-level offense. Leavitt gets to see a place that’s buzzing with energy and opportunity. He wouldn’t be walking into a rebuild. He’d be walking into a team that just played for it all.
There’s no word yet on how serious things are, but getting him on campus during this kind of week isn’t nothing. Leavitt’s portal ride has been all over the place, but this visit feels like a possible turning point. Miami’s staff has a shot to close. Now we wait to see if they do.
