Scott Frost will return as the head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers in 2022, despite four consecutive losing seasons at the helm. On Monday, Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts announced the decision in a statement that included the caveat that Frost agreed to a pay cut to return.
"Scott has laid out a clear plan and vision for the future of Nebraska football and has agreed to a restructured contract," Alberts said. "I have been clear that I have been looking for incremental progress, and I have seen that in several key areas this season. Our team has continued to compete at a high level and the young men in our program have remained unified and shown great resiliency, which is an important reflection of the leadership of Coach Frost and his staff."
The incremental progress that Alberts has seen hasn't shown up in the win column, however. Nebraska's 26-17 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday dropped the Cornhuskers to 3-7 on the year and guaranteed another losing season. Frost's best year with the Cornhuskers was in 2019 when they finished 5-7.
According to Mitch Sherman of The Athletic, Frost's salary for the 2022 season was cut by $1 million and his buyout was halved.
Scott Frost’s salary will be reduced next year from $5 million to $4 million and his buyout in 2022 from $15 million to $7.5 million, according to AD Trev Alberts.

“In a way, Scott’s bet on himself,” Alberts said.
Frost, 46, was the Cornhuskers' starting quarterback in 1996 and 1997, and he began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Nebraska in 2002. He climbed through the ranks and spent two seasons as head coach of Central Florida, leading the Knights to an undefeated season in 2017. After that season, Frost was hired by Nebraska as head coach in 2018.
