SEC College Football Rankings: Spring 2026 First Look
© Brett Davis-Imagn Images

The SEC will be better at college football in 2026.

Enough is enough. After getting dunked on by everyone last bowl season, and with the conference ceding college football superiority to the Big Ten, the SEC is about to roar back.

The seemingly weakest teams will be far better, the top teams appear to be national title-good - and not just College Football Playoff-nice - and we're in for a whopper of a season.

This will change several times and several ways over the next six months, but as a starting point, here are our SEC rankings before spring football gets going.

Ranking Every SEC Team Heading Into Spring Practice

16. Arkansas

Why the Hogs are Here: New head coach Ryan Silverfield hit the transfer portal hard to change everything around. His Memphis offenses always worked, and his Hogs will light it up and be a hard out, but it’s all about the …

What Needs Work: Defense, defense, defense, defense, DEFENSE. Silverfield’s defenses at Memphis were okay-to-blah, but the Hogs have little chance of making a big push if the D - especially the pass defense - isn’t far stronger right away.

15. Kentucky

Why the Wildcats are Here: If you didn’t like last year’s Kentucky team, don’t worry, things are way different now under new head coach Will Stein. The Cats LOADED UP from the transfer portal, especially on the offensive line.

What Needs Work: The new coaching staff has to get the passing game to bomb away. There were too many interceptions, not enough downfield plays, and the Cats have to go from blah to dangerous, and it’ll take every offseason practice to get there.

Top Transfer In: Lance Heard, OT Tennessee
Biggest Loss: Cutter Boley, QB to Arizona State

14. Mississippi State

Why the Rebels are Here: It took a few years, but the offense should be dangerous every week, and there’s just enough back on defense to be better. This might not be an SEC title contender, but it’ll screw up a few of the stars.

What Needs Work: The attitude to just let it rip. The talent might not be there compared to other SEC teams, but the passing attack should be outstanding. Most games will be shootouts unless the pass rush is way better, but as long as the offense is amazing, it should all be okay.

13. Vanderbilt

Why the Commodores are Here: Don’t just dismiss the Commodores now that Diego Pavia is gone. They hit the transfer portal hard and well, and while the quarterback play won’t be nearly as magical or good, the rest of the parts are solid.

What Needs Work: The pass defense has to be better. Granted, most teams were throwing to try keeping up with Pavia, and the Commodore pass rush was fine, but the defense will need to tighten up with the offense not likely to be nearly as good.

12. Tennessee

Why the Volunteers are Here: There’s no excuse for the offense to be anything but amazing with a ton of talent back, great transfers coming in and … now the quarterback situation has to be settled. Expect lots and lots of shootouts this year.

What Needs Work: The pass defense has to be better. It’s part of the deal with teams throwing to keep pace with the Vol attack, and the pass rush was amazing, but the defense allowed 245 yards per game and allowed way too many first downs.

Top Transfer In: Chaz Coleman, WR Penn State
Biggest Loss: Lance Heard, OT to Kentucky

11. Auburn

Why the Tigers are Here: So, you didn’t like the offense last year? Get ready for it all to ramp up fast under new head coach Alex Golesh. There might have been a slew of big losses in the portal, but the USF attack of last year should make the Tigers rock.

What Needs Work: Get it all up to speed. The defense should be good again, and now comes the night-and-day upgrade on the offensive side. Fast, fast, fast, fast, fast - all of the new parts have to get the speed of the attack down.

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Byrum Brown, QB USF
Biggest Loss: Cam Coleman, WR to Texas

Season Opener: Baylor (in Atlanta), Sept. 5

10. Florida

Why the Gators are Here: Under new head coach Jon Sumrall, Florida should crank it all up fast. The defense has a surprising amount of experience, and the offense should be okay as long as the line comes together this offseason.

What Needs Work: Third downs - stop being bad at them. It all starts with moving the chains and stopping other teams from hitting their third down throws. Sumrall’s Tulane lines were great last year and solid on third downs.

Top Transfer In: Eric Singleton, WR Auburn
Biggest Loss: DJ Lagway, QB to Baylor

Season Opener: Florida Atlantic, Sept. 5

9. Missouri

Why the Tigers are Here: The defense needs to reboot, but running back Ahmad Hardy and the offense should be even better, steadier, and more explosive. The Tigers did a wonderful job in the transfer portal.

What Needs Work: Get the new parts to ramp up the passing game. It’ll be easy to keep handing the ball off to Hardy, but the downfield attack has to be there to open things up far more. Winning the turnover margin now and then would be nice, too.

Biggest Loss: Damon Wilson II, EDGE to Miami

8. South Carolina

Why the Gamecocks are Here: Buy low on the Gamecocks. With quarterback LaNorris Sellers back with a deep receiving corps that should be far better, and after winning the transfer portal on both sides of the ball, this should be the team everyone was expecting last year.

What Needs Work: Get the mojo back. There’s talent, Sellers is a special player, and there’s no reason for the team - especially the offensive efficiency - to be anything less than great. It’s a confidence thing, and that comes with more experience and early success.

Top Transfer In: Jacarrius Peak, OT NC State
Biggest Loss: Boez Stanley, C to Purdue

7. Texas A&M

Why the Aggies are Here: They aren’t as good as they were last year, but quarterback Marcel Reed is back, the transfer portal was kind to both sides of the ball, and it should be College Football Playoff or Bust considering how good the lines should be again.

What Needs Work: Make more big plays on defense. The Aggies allowed teams to score a bit too easily after allowing drives inside the 20, there weren’t enough interceptions, and overall, they need to win the turnover margin more.

2025 CFN Rankings
Record: 11-2
Preseason: 12
Final: 9

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Isaiah Horton, WR Alabama
Biggest Loss: Theo Melin Ohrstrom, TE to SMU

Season Opener: Missouri State, Sept. 5
- 2026 Texas A&M Schedule Breakdown

6. Ole Miss

Why the Rebels are Here: As of this immediate moment, Trinidad Chambliss is back, but if the NCAA has something to say about it, Deuce Knight (Auburn) is hardly a bad option to work around. There’s just enough back on both sides of the ball to be dangerous again. Maybe not top four CFP-dangerous, but very, very good.

What Needs Work: Getting past the Lane Kiffin thing. Yeah, he’s coming up right away in the SEC season, but the program proved it can do just fine with Golding. As long as the defense is strong again, everything else should work in the new era. Basically, act like a team that was in the College Football Playoff semis.

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Carius Curne, OT LSU
Biggest Loss: Princewill Umanmielen, EDGE to LSU

Season Opener: UTEP, Sept. 5

5. Alabama

Why the Tide are Here: The defense has enough parts back - especially in the secondary - to be stronger, and the defensive front got the reinforcements from the transfer portal.

However, at the moment, there are too many thoughts and prayers when it comes to the offensive new parts - the line needs an overhaul.

What Needs Work: Even if the running game isn’t always the main part of the Kalen DeBoer offense, you’re Alabama. Averaging just over 100 rushing yards per game isn’t okay, but if that’s the deal, the passing game had better be way stronger and way more consistent.

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Terrance Green, DT Oregon
Biggest Loss: James Smith, DT to Ohio State

Season Opener: East Carolina, Sept. 5

4. Texas

Why the Longhorns are Here: Arch Manning is back, his receiving corps is loaded, running back Hollywood Smothers (NC State) is fantastic, and the defense should be another killer. They are a true national title contender if they can …

What Needs Work:
Get the running game going and do more on the offensive line, but overall, stop with the penalties. The Longhorns shot themselves in the foot way too often, averaging over eight flags per game.

2025 CFN Rankings
Record: 10-3
Preseason: 2
Final: 8

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Cam Coleman, WR Auburn
Biggest Loss: DeAndre Moore, WR to Colorado

Season Opener: Texas State, Sept. 5

3. Oklahoma

Why the Sooners are Here: Look … out. John Mateer is back at quarterback for an offense that got better through the transfer portal, the defense is loaded up with experience, and the potential is there to do even more.

What Needs Work: Get the running game going. Mateer will be great, and the defense will be strong, but the ground attack has to be more than just along for the ride. Averaging 119 rushing yards per game isn’t okay.

Record: 10-3
Preseason: 13
Final: 13

Transfer Portal

Top Transfer In: Trell Harris, WR Virginia
Biggest Loss: Sammy Omosigho, LB to UCLA

Season Opener: UTEP, Sept. 5
- 2026 Oklahoma Schedule Breakdown

2. LSU

Why the Tigers are Here: It’ll be fashionable to dunk and dog everything about Lane Kiffin as the world cheers on any slight failures, but … nope.

LSU is about to go to a whole other level, and it’ll happen in a big hurry with Kiffin building on the existing base of talent to put together one of the nation’s best teams in an instant.

What Needs Work: The offense needs to work, and that will be fixed immediately. Kiffin’s attack will be amazing, and compared to last year, it starts with pushing the ball down the field more. As long as all the new parts come together fast this offseason, look out.

2025 CFN Rankings
Record: 7-6
Preseason: 8
Final: 32

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Sam Leavitt, QB Arizona State
Biggest Loss: Carius Curne, OT to Ole Miss

Season Opener: Clemson, Sept. 5
- 2026 LSU Schedule Breakdown

1. Georgia

Why the Bulldogs are Here: The defending SEC champions are among the most experienced teams in the conference. That was a bit of the knock last year - the Bulldogs were a bit young. That’s not the problem now with depth to go along with all the next-level talent.

What Needs Work: Enough is enough. The pass rush has to be amazing. The Bulldogs have all the talent in the world, but the defensive front has to bother more offenses after finishing dead last in the SEC in sacks and tackles for loss.

2025 CFN Rankings
Record: 12-2
Preseason: 6
Final: 6

Transfer Portal
Top Transfer In: Amaris Williams, EDGE Auburn
Biggest Loss: Dominick Kelly, CB to Ohio State

Season Opener: Tennessee State, Sept. 5
