Seminoles true freshman QB Kevin Sperry has what many players in his position don't, and Gus Malzahn recognizes that

When the Florida State Seminoles went 2-10 last year, not many people expected them to still have some good freshmen going into this year. But Mike Norvell and his new staff did some pretty impressive things, and this freshman class is really, really good.

On Saturday against Kent State, some of them got some very valuable reps, like true freshman QB Kevin Sperry, who was actually in the game because of Thomas Castellanos getting injured. Sperry was great and showed some good things that even Malzahn couldn't help but praise.

"He's getting experience, he's got a lot of natural stuff," Malzahn told reporters on Sunday during his next-day press conference.

We all know Malzahn; he doesn't just hand out extreme compliments very often. But, he said that Sperry has very natural stuff, which not many true freshman QBs have or get to show within their first three games on an elite team.

Seminoles QB Kevin Sperry can be great

The Seminoles flipped Sperry from the Oklahoma Sooners this offseason. They needed a quarterback, one who can potentially take over when Castellanos is gone, and Sperry can be that. Well, at least he looks like he can get to that eventually, as he still has a lot to learn.

But Sperry has 125 passing yards on 8/10 passing and two passing touchdowns. Sperry has delivered the ball on time to his targets with some zip on it. And what's even better is his calmness and awareness in the pocket. For a true freshman, that's truly something you do not see often. In fact, most of the time, the freshmen are more jumpy than anything.

Sperry was a four-star quarterback in the 2025 class, one that the Seminoles likely thought should have been ranked higher, which is why they pursued him so heavily. He had such a good offseason that he jumped everyone who was in the QB room on the depth chart, besides Castellanos.

Now, Sperry is showing off in-season, and he's making as many of the reps as he can before conference play starts, where those will come a lot less with Castellanos playing at a Heisman level.
