Senior Bowl performance did not help this QB's NFL Draft stock

The Senior Bowl is one of the most important weeks of the year for NFL Draft prospects as it gives them an opportunity to meet and work with NFL coaching staffs. A strong performance throughout the week and a strong showing in the game can help rocket a player up draft boards. That did not turn out to be the case for former Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman.

With Washington's Michael Penix Jr. withdrawing from the game, Hartman had an opportunity to do the bulk of the quarterback play for the National Team. It did not go smoothly for him.

Hartman completed just 7-of-25 passes for a forgettable 69 yards. While he did help lead his team to a 16-7 win, his individual performance was what scouts and NFL coaching staffs will be focused on.

The signal-caller also continued his career-long trend from college of getting picked off by a Louisville defensive back, throwing an interception to Jarvis Brownlee Jr. It was noteworthy because in six career games against Louisville, Hartman was intercepted eight times, including six in his last two games as the Cardinals.

Hartman's performance on Saturday capped off a tough week, as he struggled to consistently throw the football during practice sessions. Hartman spent the first five years of his college career at Wake Forest before transferring to Notre Dame for the 2023 season. Early in the season, he looked like a potential Heisman Trophy candidate, but Hartman was unable to maintain that level of play all season.

The 2024 class is deep with quarterbacks, especially at the top with USC's Caleb Williams, North Carolina's Drake Maye and LSU's Jayden Daniels – all expected to go early in the first round and potentially with the top-three picks. Michigan's J.J. McCarthy, Oregon's Bo Nix and Penix Jr. are also potential first-or second-round selections.

Hartman entered the week as a possible late-round pick.
