Shedeur Sanders has the internet debating after serving straight heat in minicamp

In a rookie minicamp where the spotlight has firmly centered on Colorado Buffaloes star Shedeur Sanders, longtime Browns insider Tony Grossi offered a take that turned heads.

“I thought Dillon Gabriel both days looked a little bit better,” Grossi said in an ESPN Cleveland segment covering the Browns’ early offseason workouts. “He throws a tight spiral. He throws a beautiful ball. He’s very assertive.”

That opinion runs counter to the national buzz, where Sanders has drawn more attention for his poise and pedigree under center. Sanders, who threw for over 4,100 yards and 37 touchdowns at Colorado last season, has been widely viewed as the more NFL-ready prospect.

Yet Grossi was impressed with Gabriel’s mechanics, pocket presence, and arm strength—surprising traits from a quarterback listed at just 5’11”.

“He knows the pocket,” Grossi added. “You could tell that even though they’re not rushing. He just had a pocket presence, better arm strength than I thought.”

While Grossi acknowledged Sanders’ potential and clarified that his comments weren’t meant as a knock—“Doesn’t mean Shedeur Sanders is a bust or anything”—his assessment bucks the near-universal praise Sanders has received, especially from those familiar with his development under Deion Sanders.

It’s worth noting that minicamp is a non-contact setting, a point Grossi himself made clear: “It’s touch football right now. But you still count the numbers. Yeah. Well, the numbers are the only things that don’t lie.”

For Colorado fans closely following Shedeur’s NFL journey, Grossi’s remarks are a reminder that the leap to the pros is a marathon, not a sprint. Early impressions are just that—early. Sanders still has the tools, intangibles, and bloodline to carve out a long NFL career.

But in a minicamp snapshot where most have already anointed him the better quarterback, Grossi’s call serves as a dose of realism—and a hint that this Browns QB room could be more competitive than expected.

Don’t blink, Buffs fans. This is just the beginning.
