Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is tabbed as a key replacement for a former franchise passer in Mel Kiper Jr.'s first NFL mock draft of the year.
The Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year put together an impressive senior campaign for the Buffaloes under his father and Colorado head coach Deion Sanders in 2024.
Shedeur Sanders (6-foot-2, 215 pounds) finished first nationally in completion percentage (74%), second in touchdown passes (37) and fourth in passing yards (4,134).
And despite Colorado allowing 43 sacks on the season (126th nationally), Sanders' efforts helped the program reach nine wins for the first time since 2016.
The biggest question surrounding Sanders' 2025 NFL Draft projection is how he stacks up against Miami quarterback Cam Ward, who is also in contention to be the top passer taken this spring.
Although Sanders is rated as his No. 1 quarterback, Ward gets the nod at No. 1 overall to the Tennessee Titans in Kiper's new mock draft.
"I actually have Sanders ranked one spot ahead of Ward on my Big Board (No. 4 overall)," Kiper wrote. "Ward has the early top-pick buzz around the league, though, so that's where I'm leaning for now."
This scenario would slot Sanders at No. 3 overall to the New York Giants, one spot behind Colorado teammate and Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter at second overall (Cleveland Browns).
The Giants have moved on from former No. 6 overall pick Daniel Jones after awarding him a four-year, $160 million deal in 2023. New York finished 30th in passing offense in 2024, and Jones threw just eight touchdowns to seven interceptions in 10 games.
It's hard to imagine the Giants not turning to a quarterback, even if a trade ultimately takes place on draft night.
"Sanders is super accurate, completing 74% of his throws this season," Kiper wrote. "He could step in right away and lift the entire offense, including standout 2024 first-rounder Malik Nabers. Time is running out for GM Joe Schoen and coach Brian Daboll; they have to get this right."
Sanders and Ward will draw a lot of eyes from NFL franchises at the top of the draft order. And the pre-draft process will serve as a key barometer for that decision.
Sanders is expected to participate in the East-West Shrine Bowl before the combine and Colorado's Pro Day.
The 2025 NFL Draft is slated for April 24-26 in Green Bay, Wisconsin.
