Shilo Sanders explains how he has a key trait that will help him make the Bucs' 53-man roster

Most of the time, your general NFL fan doesn't know a whole lot of about their favorite team's undrafted free agents, but every now and then a name like Shilo Sanders gets thrown into the mix.

And naturally, people get excited about the idea of a guy like that rising to the occasion and making an even bigger name for himself while a team like the Tampa Bay Buccaneers benefits on the field.

The reality, though, is Sanders' odds of making the final cut are nowhere near guaranteed. Even with room to maneuver in a thin Bucs safety group, Sanders has to show he can take his game to the next level over the next couple of months or else the practice squad will be his best shot at sticking around in Tampa Bay.

Fortunately for him, he has one of the most important traits a player at his position needs to make a roster: the ability to create turnovers at a high rate.

"It's just an IT thing, either you got it or you don't," Sanders confidently told reporters during rookie minicamp. "But throughout my whole career, I've always been, you know, a guy that gets the ball out in any way, shape or form. Forced fumbles, picks - I'm gonna get the ball. That's the whole part of playing defense - we want to get the offense the ball."

Sanders recorded six takeaways in 21 games with the Colorado Buffaloes that included one interception and five forced fumbles. The forced fumbles make sense due to Sanders' physical play style and he took the interception to the house for six points, as well.

The Bucs have talked about forcing more turnovers all offseason long. Defensive coach George Edwards even spoke about it with reporters on Tuesday. As mentioned earlier, the Bucs safety room is a thin one. Sanders stands a great chance of making the 53-man roster if can go out and make big plays during OTAs, minicamp, and then eventually training camp/the preseason.

"I think everybody understands those were the numbers from last year," said Edwards. "Now, what are we going to do to improve? so the concentration of focus. I mean, we probably had about eight that we had a chance [to make]. I mean, they were in our hands and we didn't make it. That's what it boils down to: You have to make the interceptions and the turnovers when they come to you. You have to force the ball out of the out of the offense's hands. You have to take the ball away. That's the number one emphasis.

"So for us, it boils down to being in those situations and then, from a coaching aspect of it, all you can do is put them in those situations and then make sure the fundamentals and the technique of catching the ball... We had the opportunity, we just didn't get it done... In that moment you have to get it done."

Sanders is already making his mark, too, and it hasn't come in the form of takeaways. Todd Bowles specifically mentioned during rookie minicamp how he was impressed with Sanders' communication skills and understanding of the defense. So, not only does have forcing takeaways on his resume, he's showing the Bucs coaching staff that he's handling the mental part of the game, which is just as important.

“Like the rest of the safeties, he’s very intelligent, he’s very loud," said Bowles. "You can hear him today, making calls and everything, so he has a good grasp of things Day 1. There was about three or four of them that did. He was one of them, but you have to make plays in pads. That’s what it comes down to – knowing what to do and then doing it consistently and constantly getting better every day.”

No matter what, the Bucs are going to get the kid's all over the next few months and it'll be intriguing to see how it all plays out come the end of August.

"They gave me a chance before anyone so I'm forever grateful to the Buccaneers," said Sanders. "And you know, I'm just going to do everything I can to help this team win, everything in my power to help this team win. That's all I want."
