SMU Football Faces Backlash After Team GPA Under Rhett Lashlee Surfaces
© Gregory Fisher-USA TODAY Sports

The SMU football program found itself at the center of social media mockery this week. After celebrating an academic milestone they felt was impressive, the court of public opinion had a different ruling.

The Mustangs’ official X account posted a graphic proudly announcing the team’s highest-ever full semester GPA was a 2.95.

“Getting it done in the classroom This semester marks the highest full semester GPA in program history,” they shared to the world.

The internet didn’t waste time responding. Within hours, users began roasting SMU, questioning why this was being treated as a major achievement.

Many keyboard warriors noted that while it may mark internal progress, it’s not exactly worthy of a headline. Especially coming from a school ranked No. 91 in the country by U.S. News & World Report.

"You didn't have to post this btw," Capt. Marchy wrote.

"A 2.95 gpa in basket weaving and coloring book classes," Justin said.

"C’s get degrees," Milroe added.

"They bragging about a C+," Seattle Sports Fan said.

"All that money need to buy more tutors," TG added.

"Groundbreaking stuff happening here!," Lord Xandab noted.

"Remember when Texas did this and then fired their social media person the next day," B Barben said.

"The best time to delete this was right after you posted it. The second best time is now," Fancouver wrote.

Though SMU is far from the only school to boast about team GPAs, it joins a growing list of athletic programs. The trend of publicizing average classroom feats has become increasingly common, but rarely goes over well with fans.

To be fair, SMU’s 2.95 GPA is far from the worst academic performance in college football. Deion Sanders and Colorado posted the same GPA on Friday. Itpp’s also not the kind of number most expect to be flaunted.

But on social media, the jokes came fast and didn’t stop.
