SMU scored a massive recruiting victory on Tuesday when Kenneth Goodwin III, a highly touted 2026 linebacker from Bishop Montgomery High School in Torrance, California, announced his commitment to the Mustangs.
The 6-foot-2, 205-pound four-star prospect chose SMU over an impressive list of national powerhouses, including Georgia, Michigan, Oregon, and Texas A&M. Goodwin is ranked as the No. 132 overall player in the nation by ESPN and the No. 32 prospect in talent-rich California, highlighting just how significant this pickup is for SMU’s future class.
Goodwin’s recruitment has been closely followed by all the major recruiting sites. He’s made multiple visits to Michigan and Georgia, but decided SMU would be the next stop in his football career.
Georgia was widely believed to be his leader, with Michigan pushing hard as well. But SMU’s coaching staff secured Goodwin’s pledge, pulling a top-level talent out of the West Coast and into the heart of Texas.
Goodwin’s on-field potential is undeniable. He first made waves at the National Preps Camp in February 2023, where he earned linebacker MVP honors. At the event, he measured with an impressive 75-inch wingspan and a 4.68-second 40-yard dash, one of the fastest among all linebackers.
Goodwin’s versatility makes him a true asset. He’s big enough to thrive inside, quick enough to rush the passer off the edge, and smooth enough in space to cover receivers and backs.
With Goodwin now in the fold, he joins San Marcos (Texas) linebacker Izayah Young, who committed to SMU in June. Together, they give SMU a strong linebacker duo in the 2026 class and close out a successful early cycle for coach Rhett Lashlee and the Mustangs.
