The SMU Mustangs defeated Memphis 30-27 on Oct. 3, but that win didn't come without multiple losses.
As Adam Rittenberg of ESPN explained, SMU coach Sonny Dykes told reporters on Monday that wide receiver Reggie Roberson Jr. and running back TJ McDaniel won't play again this year because of injuries. Roberson went down with a knee injury in the win over Memphis, while McDaniel hurt his ankle. Both players will undergo surgery to repair those problems.
Roberson leads the Mustangs in catches (22), receiving yards (474), and touchdown grabs (5). He improved his yards per catch average from 18.7 in 2019 to 21.5 before the injury and caught five passes for 243 yards with two touchdowns against Memphis. Walter Football forecasts Roberson could be a late-round selection in next year's NFL Draft.
McDaniel, meanwhile, is second on the team with 297 rushing yards. He was averaging 4.9 yards per carry before his season ended prematurely.
SMU is ranked 17th in the country following wins over Texas State, North Texas, Stephen F. Austin, and Memphis. The Mustangs play Tulane (2-2) on Friday.
