This Week 8 matchup is a rematch of last season’s ACC Championship game. Of course, the Tigers went on to defeat the Mustangs 34-31 thanks to the last-second Nolan Hauser field goal from 56 yards out.

The victory propelled Clemson to a College Football Playoff appearance as the fifth-highest ranked conference champion. With three losses, they were awarded a No. 12 seed. SMU was awarded an at-large bid into the CFP, being named as the No. 11 seed as the only two representatives of the ACC in the first-ever 12-team playoff.

In 2025, neither team is having the season they expected. Both programs have fallen out of the AP Top 25 poll entirely after starting the season ranked.

SMU will be the fresher of the two, as the Mustangs enjoyed its bye week during Week 7. This came after beating Syracuse 31-18 their last time out to improve to 4-2 on the season. For Clemson, they faced Boston College on the road last week. They return home to battle SMU as a part of a three-game home stand for the Tigers.
