Son Of NFL Legend Antonio Gates Announces He's Transferring

One of the greatest tight ends of all-time reportedly has a son on the move.

According to Hayes Fawcett of On3.com, Antonio Gates Jr., son of eight-time Pro Bowler and Chargers legend Antonio Gates, plans to enter the transfer portal.

Gates is a 6-foot-2, 193-pound receiver who has spent the last two seasons at Michigan State. He'll jump in the portal with nine catches, 131 yards and a touchdown to his name — with three years of eligibility remaining.

Gates was a four-star prospect coming out of Fordson High School in Dearborn, MI. He was a top 50 receiver in his class and received offers from the likes of Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Penn State, Tennessee, West Virginia and Ohio State.

Fans reacted to Saturday's news on social media:

"Smart decision young man," a user said.

"Dumpster fire in East Lansing," a rival replied.

"Have no idea if there's any current interest but #olemiss was involved in his recruitment out of high school," a Rebels account pointed out. "Maybe something to keep an eye on."

"Yeah he's a Buckeye," a fan posted.

"get him a real team," another user asserted.

"Not too surprised by this. AGJ was not receiving as many snaps as he likely wanted. Maybe he gets a showcase himself elsewhere, now," a reporter commented.

Gates hasn't been listed on the Spartans roster for a while now. His info was scrubbed from the team's website prior to Oct. 26's game vs. Michigan.

His last appearance for MSU came against Prairie View A&M back in Week 3 where he caught three passes for 42 yards. Given his Hall of Fame bloodlines it wouldn't be surprising in the least to see Gates garner a ton of attention on the open market.

Michigan State finished 5-7 this year to marks its third straight losing season since 2021's 11-2 campaign under Mel Tucker.
